Art supplies lie scattered on the desk and the floor, allowing only the skillful to grab a certain object without causing a Jenga effect. People walk by the gap, stare at the room for a few moments, then walk away to other artwork while mumbling about how any work can get done in a room like that.
The room, which was moved from the University of Nevada, Reno to the Nevada Museum of Art, was that of Michael Sarich, UNR associate professor and part of his exhibit "Like, Love, Lust: Michael Sarich."
"In the time I've been in Reno, I have quickly learned that Michael Sarich is a key figure in the Northern Nevada art scene," said David Walker, NMA Executive Director.
The exhibit features work that ranges from Sarich's early multi-layered personal narratives to recent work, which integrates social commentaries.
Iconography is incorporated heavily in Sarich's artwork, including the Virgin Mary, Mickey Mouse and the yellow smiley face.
"I'm a storyteller," said Sarich. "I use iconography that is taken from symbols that have taken on too much importance. They're not bad symbols, just saturated. It's about the romantic and the innocent that has taken on a strange twist."
Sarich has been an associate art professor at UNR for 19 years and has had work featured in about 30 exhibits since coming to Reno in 1989. Sarich also has been a visiting lecturer for numerous colleges across the country and international colleges.
The exhibit will run through March 30 and admission is free for NMA members, $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors.
